Two military helicopters crash in Hawaii, several missing

The Coast Guard is leading a search off the Hawaiian island of Oahu after reports that two Marine helicopters had collided.

Coast Guard officials told CBS News that a debris field, including an empty life raft and a fire, were found more than 2 miles from Haleiwa.

The two helicopters were from the nearby Kaneohe Bay US Marine Corps Air Station, and each had six people on board, CBS News reports, citing the Coast Guard. USCG arrived on scene just after midnight local time and located a debris field.

Initial calls came in around 11 p.m.in the waters off Kahaone Loop in Waialua, KHON reported.

“They are now searching for any possible personnel”, Mooers said. The Navy, the Marines and the local fire department are aiding in the search effort.
