Two more chikungunya deaths in Delhi, 3 fatalities in 24 hrs

In Delhi, the number of dengue and chikungunya cases crossed the mark of 1,000 last week, as the vector-borne diseases is spreading at a very fast pace.

According to reports, the chikungunya cases in the national capital has increased to over 1,000 this season, marking a jump of almost 90 per cent from its count last week. Safdarjung Hospital which received over a 1,000 patients in its fever clinics recently, has reported as many as 328 dengue cases and 532 cases of chikungunya this season.

However, the civic bodies data shows a lower count.

For SDMC, which reported the highest number of people diagnosed with chikungunya, its four zone recorded cases as follows – West (56), Central (57), South (56) and Najafgarh (33). Among those affected by the mosquito-borne diseases are a number of doctors of both central and Delhi government hospitals, leading to a staff crunch in many departments. The NDMC and EDMC recorded 105 and 70 cases respectively while 374 cases were reported from areas falling outside the jurisdiction of municipal corporations in the city. In Delhi, according to figures put up by NVBDCP, 432 cases of chikungunya have been reported.

Three people died of chikangunya on Monday, the first deaths from that disease in the capital. This year, 652 confirmed cases of dengue have come to the fore.

“It is the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) that has to take preventive steps like fogging and sanitation in the city to check the spread of dengue and chikungunya”.

Mishra, meanwhile, appealed to the people of Delhi not to panic and warned private hospitals not to deny treatment to patients.
