In the latest fatal incident, the Israeli military said a Palestinian rammed his vehicle into Israeli soldiers at a West Bank checkpoint.
An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed that an attack had occurred in the area and local witnesses told Ma’an that two Palestinians were shot and killed by Israeli forces following the attack.
In another attack, earlier in the day, police said a soldier was stabbed and lightly wounded in Jerusalem by a 30-year-old attacker.
“Forces responded to the imminent danger and fired towards the perpetrator”, the military said, adding that the injured soldier had been evacuated to hospital. Police said they had “spotted a man who aroused their suspicions and approached him to check”. A nearby security guard apprehended the attacker who was then taken into police custody.
Palestinians mourners carry the body of Mahdia Hammad, 38, during her funeral in the village of Silwad, near the West Bank city of Ramallah, Saturday, Dec. 26, 2015.
The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed the death of the young Palestinian man, who was later identified as Mos’ab Mahmoud al-Ghazali, 26, from Wad Qaddoum neighborhood in Silwan town, in occupied Jerusalem. Most of the others have been killed in clashes with security forces.
Twenty Israelis and a US citizen have been killed in a campaign of stabbings, shootings and car-rammings since the start of October.
Israeli leaders blame the Palestinian Authority for incitement to violence due to religious motives, sparked by tensions over the flashpoint holy site of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in east Jerusalem. The Palestinians say it is rooted in frustrations stemming from almost five decades of Israeli occupation.
