The airport is located about 50 miles west of Atlanta and has no air traffic controllers or control tower.
Richards said Stone was a flight instructor. One of the planes is registered to an address in College Park.
“We received a 911 call that there was a plane that had crashed at the airport, but when our workers arrived, we realized that it was in fact two planes that had collided with one another”, said Blue.
“Another pilot in the air said it appeared that both of them were trying to land and one came on top of the other”, Carroll County Fire Chief Scott Blue told The Associated Press in a phone interview.
Blue said both planes were single-engine aircraft.
The incident occurred just before 11 a.m. on Wednesday off the runway of West Georgia Regional Airport.
A coroner says the victims were two men and one woman. Stone worked for Falcon Aviation Academy and was flying with a 20-year-old student who has not yet been identified. Authorities said they were told by witnesses that the two planes entered a landing pattern at the same time above the airport.
WSB-TV reports (http://2wsb.tv/2casnZl ) Bud Benefield, a deputy fire chief for Carroll County, confirmed three people died in the crash.
