Two police injured in West Philly shooting; one suspect killed

Nicholas Glenn strode up Sansom Street just before midnight with a 9mm Ruger in his hand.

Ross described the letter as rambling.

The bar door at Maximum Level Lounge normally would have been closed, said Whitefield.

Ross says the suspect also shot into a bar, striking a security guard in the leg, and used a woman as a shield before shooting her in the leg.

Both Miller and Young, a 19-year police veteran, were in stable condition Saturday at Penn Presbyterian Hospital. Her shift was nearly over. He later fired into a auto, seriously wounding a man and woman, he said.

Late on Friday, nearby officers heard the initial gunshots and began pursuing the suspect on foot.

Based on the letter, Ross said, he suspected Glenn may have suffered from a mental illness. He fired on the two people inside the vehicle, striking a 36-year-old man and 25-year-old woman.

As dozens of officers swarmed the scene, crime scene investigators pulled the envelope from Glenn’s pocket. Ross said she is talking and will be OK. Glenn also had at least three magazines, and a plastic bag with 13-15 live rounds, according to police.

The shootings in Philadelphia follow similar, ambush-style shootings in July that left five police officers dead in Dallas and three dead in Baton Rouge. Young, Miller and the three civilians hit by gunfire are all in stable condition and “good spirits”, the commissioner said.

Although Galent apparently did not know Young, he was “clearly trying to assassinate her”, Ross said. That happened not far from where Friday night’s rampage began.

Officials say the gunman was acting alone, but still many questions remain as to why he went on this rampage. Some of the bullets hit her arm or were deflected by her bulletproof vest.

Young, 46, survived the hail of bullets.

Seconds later, she could be heard on the police radio: “I’m at the McDonald’s on 51st St.”, she screamed.

The first officers on the scene, also 22nd District patrol officers, found Young slumped in the front seat, pulled her into an arriving patrol auto, and took off after Glenn. She said she was “so relieved and pleased to report that he is getting excellent care and will fully recover from his wounds”.

The officer said a suspect is in custody.

Then the suspect shot her in the leg and resumed running east on Sansom.

On Sansom Street, near 51st, he fired into a bar, the Maximum Level Lounge, wounding a security guard.

“I had the opportunity to be with both police officers this evening, and their families”, Kenney told WPVI.

Bacia Clark lives on the 5100 block of Sansom, in between where Glenn allegedly shot Sgt.

“He just walks up on her”.

He later shot into a vehicle, striking a man and a woman.

Dozens of squad cars sped to the scene.

Ross said the shooter didn’t appear to have been motivated by terrorism or religious beliefs, unlike the man accused of ambushing a Philadelphia officer multiple times in January.
