Belgium’s prime minister is meeting with the country’s security services following an attack by a machete-wielding man on two policewomen that left one officer with deep facial wounds.

A police officer secures the scene near the police headquarters in Charleroi, Belgium, on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016.

No further information was given on the state of the police officers or on the individual who carried out the attack.

“A third officer, who was there at the police station, opened fire on the attacker”.

The assault occurred outside a police station in the city center.

According to initial local media reports, the man was alone when he approached a security check point at the police station.

White said that officers are working on the theory that it is terrorist related. They later announced in a message on Twitter that he had died of his wounds.

“Thoughts go with the victims, their relatives and police officers”, he wrote on Twitter. “We will follow the situation closely”. It said: “We confirm the death of the machete attacker”. The city of around 200,000 people lies south of Brussels.

The attacker was wounded but alive, according to the Charleroi Police Twitter account.
