We are not naming the players involved, but Luke Shaw has now moved to deny he is one of them.
Two Premier League players – including an England worldwide – are set to come out as gay simultaneously.
Defender Luke Shaw took to twitter to say he’s not gay. And so what if he is? “He’s a United player and we support him”.
Shaw replied: “Its not me”.
Luke is now recovering from a broken leg. “Speedy Recover pal # MUFC”.
The Mirror also report that a well-known player told friends he was gay in 2011 but his auto was them daubed with a homophobic slur.
A source said: “The stigma has completely gone, and the public are far more accepting”.
Otherwise, football has been moving towards its first openly-gay big-name player since Justin Fashanu committed suicide 17 years ago after being charged with sexual assault.
“And unfortunately – perhaps more than in any other sport – there can be an aggressive mob mentality in the stands”.
Chris Basiurski chair of the Gay Football Supporters’ Network said seven of those players said they did not fear the reaction of their teammates or their club and were instead concerned about the response of the media and the fans.
“In a few years’ time I can really see this just being anybody else, anybody can succeed in sport, and if more people can come out, then that will be evident”, he told Victoria Derbyshire.
