Two Russian swimmers appeal Rio ban – CAS

In justifying its actions against Russia, the IWF said retests of samples from seven Russian weightlifters who took part in the 2008 Beijing Olympics or 2012 London Olympics resulted in positive tests, and more were expected.

The International Olympic Committee resisted a blanket ban on Russia following the most recent explosive report by Canadian law professor Richard McLaren for the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), who detailed an elaborate doping scheme in Russian sports orchestrated by the government.

Russian Federation will immediately appeal the decision to ban all eight of its weightlifters from the Rio de Janeiro Olympics for doping.

The 31st Summer Olympic Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro from August 5 through 21.

‘They are doing their job and it’s important I stick to mine, focus on getting ready and winning those gold medals’.

“All Russian wrestlers now qualified for Rio 2016 have all been tested in 2016 by WADA-accredited laboratories outside of Moscow”, UWW said in a statement on Thursday.

Russia’s team was originally 387-strong and yesterday a special tournament for the banned athletes – “Stars 2016” – was staged in Moscow.

The meeting comes less than a week after the International Olympic Committee board decided not to ban Russia’s entire team from the games because of state-sponsored doping.

Their bans came after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) last week handed the responsibility of banning Russian athletes back to the relevant sports federations.

Russian Federation will argue at the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) the suspension of its weight-lifters from the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Minister of Sports Vitaly Mutko said in an interview with Match TV on Saturday. “It is about individual athletes”, Adams said.

Zhukov said that less than 100 Russian competitors were still waiting to find out their fates and that the final makeup of the team should be announced over the weekend just a few days before the start of the Games.

Viktor Lebedev, who won gold at the World Championships in 2010 and 2011, had been among the favourites for a medal in wrestling’s 57kg freestyle division after winning gold at the European Games past year. Throughout the last 6 years I’ve been drug tested by doping control agencies at my home and at the pool, at least once a month, and sometimes every other day.

FINA said the swimmers were implicated in the report by World Anti-Doping Agency investigator Richard McLaren that detailed state-sponsored doping in Russian Federation across more than two dozen summer and winter sports, including swimming.
