Two female students were found dead on a high school campus in Glendale, Arizona after people reported hearing gunshots this morning.
Investigators said they found evidence at the scene leading them to believe that one girl took the life of the other before taking her own life, noting the investigation is still ongoing. A gun was found nearby.
The parents of the students were directed to meet at a local Walmart, where the school buses would arrive later with their children.
Superintendent Brian Capistran said social workers from the school district were providing support for students and faculty. The school is planning to bus parents to the school for the students’ release.
The girls, both 15-year-old sophomores, were each shot once, Breeden said.
Parents and others wait near a high school in Glendale, Ariz., to be reunited with students after police say two female students died in a shooting at the school in a Phoenix suburb.
The school was placed on lockdown after the shots rang out, with panicked parents rushing to the site for word about their kids. KNXV video taken from the air showed police and fire crews surrounding what appeared to be one of the shooting victims. Dozens of anxious parents were gathering, waiting to reunite with their children.
Phoenix television station ABC15 said at least one person had died in the shooting, citing unnamed sources. “Your children are safe and this is not a unsafe situation”, Breeden said, according to The Arizona Republic. More than 2,000 students are enrolled.
Glendale Officer Tracey Breeden told reporters Friday that she doesn’t know whether the victims at Independence High School are students.
Our hearts go out to everyone at Independence High School this morning. According to Glendale Police Sgt. David Vidaure, the area was isolated, but near the school’s cafeteria.
