U.S. News created Best Regional Hospitals in 2011 to provide consumers who want to stay close to home with an overall assessment of their region’s hospitals across multiple areas of care. “We pride ourselves on offering world-class medical care, while also creating a culture of hope for our patients and their families”.
U.S. News evaluated hospitals in four new areas: abdominal aortic aneurysm fix, aortic valve surgery, colon cancer surgery and lung cancer surgery. It is also ranked in the nation’s top 50 hospitals for geriatric care.
UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids is ranked number 2 in the state, and performed almost at the level of nationally ranked U.S. News Best Hospitals in 1 adult specialty, pulmonology.
The magazine and website evaluated 5,000 hospitals across the country based on patient survival rates, infection rates, the number of times a given procedure is performed, and staffing.
The state’s biggest hospital – located on the UI campus in Iowa City – earned top accolades in seven specialties, which is the same as past year and two fewer than in 2014.
The Cleveland Clinic was the only hospital in OH to land on the U.S. News “elite 20 hospital Honor Roll”, ranking No. 2 behind the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

The U.S. News rankings aren’t the only way to see how hospitals stack up.
Thomas Jefferson Hospital, the number two hospital in the Philaldephia area, also ranked nationally in 11 specialties, coming in at a super-impressive second place for ophthalmology.

The online rating tool Yelp – which provides reviews for everything from restaurants medical facilities – received attention earlier this year for competing well with the USA governments Hospital Compare website, long considered a gold standard for patient surveys.
