A double shooting at Independence High School in Glendale, Arizona, left two 15-year-old girls dead, according to Glendale police.

The 15-year-olds, described as close friends and in a relationship, were found lying next to each other under a covered patio near the cafeteria at Independence High School, near Phoenix, police said in a statement.

During the processing of the scene, a suicide note was located, police said.

Breeden said she didn’t know what led to the shooting or how well, if at all, the girls knew each other.

Breeden says the teens have been positively identified, but their names aren’t being released by police because they are juveniles. Breeden told parents awaiting word on their kids that “your children are safe”. It is also not known what their condition is, but one victim could be seen receiving medical attention from first responders in the school parking lot.

She said it was frightful waiting for word about her child.

“She said, ‘I’m OK, ‘ so I of course started crying”, Rice said.

Both girls had died from a single gunshot wound, leading Arizona police officers to believe the shooting was a murder-suicide, and not an active shooter-type situation, reports CBC.

Glendale Police responded to the school at around 8 A.M. The deceased were found in an isolated area of the campus.

School district officials said parents will be bused to the school to be reunited with their children. Police said they had no information on who may have fired the shots.

May’s sister, Phong Kieu, a science teacher at the school, learned about the shooting while in her classroom.

Capistran said IHS students should expect to attend school Tuesday after Monday’s planned day off for Presidents’ Day.

Police and fire units have descended on the school.

The district website says the school has more than 2,000 students and was founded in 1977.
