Two Troops Dead in Indian Base Attack

PATHANKOT, India (AP) – The number of troops killed in an attack on an Indian air force base has risen to seven, after four soldiers succumbed to injuries sustained in the hourslong gunbattle near the border with Pakistan and another died after being wounded in an explosion Sunday, officials said.

A fresh anti-Pakistan protest broke out in Pathankot town on Sunday with the locals burning an effigy of the neighbouring nation following the terror attack on Air Force base.

Security sources say that an initial analysis indicates the attack may have been carried out by a militant group based in Pakistan that demands independence for Indian-ruled Kashmir.

As night fell, it was unclear whether two or more militants were still at large after Saturday’s pre-dawn raid on the Pathankot air base in northwestern Punjab state.

In Pakistan, there are different agencies – there is an elected government, the Army and ISI, whose agenda probably is set by the Army or has its own agenda, and there are terrorist organisations.

The US State Department termed the assault “a heinous” terrorist attack and urged the two rivals to work together to hunt down those responsible.

AFP was not able to verify the alleged claim of responsibility.

The heavily armed gunmen, suspected to be members of the Islamist group Jaish-e-Mohammed, launched the attack on the station.

While Punjab has largely been spared such violence, however, it has not been immune.

A thorough search and combing operation, which was going on inside the IAF base and nearby areas, was under progress and various security agencies, including the Army, Indian Air Force, central forces and Punjab Police were involved.

“Building on the goodwill created during the recent high level contacts between the two countries, Pakistan remains committed to partner with India as well as other countries in the region to completely eradicate the menace of terrorism afflicting our region”, it said in a statement.

“Our prime minister visited and after that the terrorists came here”.

He said four terrorists were neutralized on Saturday after hours of fighting.

“If this attack is a sabotage, India and Pakistan, as well as the Kashmiri leadership, will have to exhibit political maturity and sagacity to defeat the vested interests”, he added.

The attack by gunmen disguised as soldiers came a week after Modi made an unscheduled visit to Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in an effort to revive talks between the nuclear-armed neighbours.
