The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) afflicts nearly 31 percent of Vietnam veterans, more than 10 percent of Gulf War veterans and 11 percent of veterans of the war in Afghanistan.

On Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, the American Legion Post 795 will hold its annual ceremony to honor active, retired and dead veterans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. As Angela Denning reports, the local post is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to who has served the country here in Petersburg. But the American Legion is so much than that. Each year, usually around Memorial Day and Veterans Day, Auxiliary volunteers distribute millions of bright red crepe paper poppies.

“A Veterans Appreciation Event” will be held at noon at the Adams Council on Aging, 3 Hoosac St., in Adams. At my State of the State address, I recognized the oldest living veteran from World War II – Richard Overton, age 109.

“We encourage all other North Carolina veterans’ organizations to provide financial support, as may be available, to help ensure that future generations will benefit from the efforts to restore and maintain the Battleship and preserve our heritage”, Bridges added.

“I wouldn’t take that back for nothing”, she said of her time spent in the service. “I think it gives you a different perspective on everything”.
