Tickets are expected to go on sale in the next two weeks, but the UFC has yet to announce any big names on the card. And of course, the dream return of Ronda Rousey. That makes Thompson a bit of a surprise, as Woodley was talking up potential bouts with GSP and Nick Diaz, saying “I feel no obligation to go by the rankings”.

Not only is he not dodging the rising contender, he will be defending his newly won UFC 170-pound title against him in his very first defense, which is exactly what most fans thought he was not going to do.

During the UFC Fight Night 94: Poirier vs. Johnson weigh-in show on FOX Sports 1, UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley made a big announcement.

Woodley has won his last three fights, capped by the first-round knockout of Lawler.

Tyron Woodley (16-3) announced Friday that he will defend the UFC welterweight title against Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson (13-1) at the promotion’s first event since NY legalized mixed martial arts earlier this year. Romero is coming of a six month suspension for a failed drug test. “Wonderboy” has been on a considerable roll of late, winning seven straight fights.

The bout joins the likes of Donald Cerrone vs. Kelvin Gastelum and Tim Kennedy vs. Rashad Evans at UFC 205. While it is yet to announce the inclusion of a superstar like Conor McGregor or Ronda Rousey, this is undoubtedly shaping up to be one of the cards of the year.
