Tyron Woodley vs. Stephen Thompson: What Was Up With That Scorecard?

Woodley didn’t win the fight; instead, the decision was a majority draw. Woodley got off to a quick start in the opening stanza, as he took Thompson down and bloodied his opponent with a short elbow from top position.

The final round appeared to be controlled by Thompson, as Woodley seemed gassed from his effort in the fourth round to finish the fight.

After an enthralling five round battle at Madison Square Garden, announcer Bruce Buffer declared Woodley as the victor, with two judges scoring the bout even at 47-47 and a third carding it 48-46 in his favor. Moments later, Buffer double-checked with the commission, and corrected the error, instead declaring the fight a majority draw. Woodley cracked him with a straight right that sent Thompson down and staggering back to the cage.

Woodley landed eight of his 11 strikes (73 percent), and all of those were considered significant blows. As the round began to wind down, Woodley looked for an explosive knockout punch, but couldn’t land as Thompson continued to score.
