North Korea recently launched short- and medium-range ballistic missiles despite a tightening of sanctions on the country under a U.N. Security Council resolution passed March 2 in the wake of its fourth nuclear test, as well as a rocket launch in February.

The launches came a day after US President Barack Obama signed an order implementing the tough sanctions outlined in the recent United Nations resolution, as well as new unilateral US measures.

It is not unusual for North Korea to launch projectiles during the U.S.-South Korean military drills.

North Korea is now holding annual military drills, when its missile and rocket firings are more common.

South Korean defense officials say North Korea doesn’t yet have functioning intercontinental ballistic missiles.

N Korea releases footage of Otto Warmbier’s “crime” North Korea has released CCTV images showing American student Otto Warmbier removing a political banner from a wall in a hotel – a “crime” that saw him sentenced to 15 years hard labour.

The UN Security Council has strongly condemned North Korea over its ballistic missile launches and demanded Pyongyang to refrain from further violations of UN resolutions.

USA officials told Reuters the medium-range missiles appeared to be fired from road-mobile launchers.

Meanwhile, North Korea claims to be testing “a re-entry vehicle aimed at returning a nuclear warhead to the atmosphere from space so it could hit its intended target”, the AP reports.

New sanctions have been slapped on North Korea over recent tests.

“Our military is maintaining full preparedness while closely monitoring the situation”, the joint chiefs said. Scud missiles have a 300- to 500-km range that would allow them to strike any location in South Korea, while Nodong missiles have a maximum range of 1,200 to 1,300 km and could be used to strike against Japan.

However, many observers doubt that North Korea has advanced its miniaturization of nuclear warheads enough to load them on missiles.
