US President Barack Obama’s nuclear envoy, Mr Sung Kim, was in Seoul yesterday for talks with his South Korean counterpart, and said they are working closely with the United Nations and other partners to secure the “strongest possible” measures against North Korea to show Pyongyang that “there are indeed serious consequences for its unlawful and risky actions”.
They told Park that they opposed her decision to deploy a US -backed missile-defense system in the South by late next year.
Following Pyongyang’s fourth nuclear test in January, the United Nations Security Council adopted the toughest sanctions regime to date, targeting the North’s trade in minerals and tightening banking restrictions.
“At present, we must work hard to prevent the situation on the peninsula continuing to escalate, and put the issue of the nuclearization of the peninsula back on the track of dialogue and consultation”, it said.
B-1B bombers, escorted by US and South Korean jets, were seen by an Associated Press photographer as they flew over Osan Air Base. Lee Sun-jin, chairman of South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, after the B-1Bs from Guam conducted a low flyover with South Korean jet fighter aircraft and U.S. F-16 fighter jets.
North Korea says US hostility is the reason it needs a nuclear bomb program. “The United States has an unshakable commitment to defend allies in the region and will take necessary steps to do so, including operations like this one today”.
China and Russian Federation have pushed for a resumption of six party talks on denuclearisation in North Korea.
The long-range supersonic strategic bombers were joined by Japanese F-2s for training to “enhance operational capabilities and the tactical skills of units”.
The Korean Peninsula remains technically at war, as the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty. South Korea also demanded new sanctions against North Korea in order to discourage the continuation of the nuclear program. US forces flew a B-52 over South Korea after Pyongyang conducted its fourth nuclear test in January.
Bad weather Monday delayed for at least 24 hours a US plan to send warplanes from Guam to South Korea, as it has done after past provocations by North Korea.
“It’s a question of North Korean intentions and commitment”.
They said the move would only further antagonize North Korea and alienate China.

Days before the nuclear test, North Korea launched what were believed to be three mid-range Rodong missiles into the Sea of Japan as China was hosting the Group of 20 summit in Hangzhou.
