Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan did not provide a timeline for the vote on the long-delayed legislation, but a congressional source said on Thursday it was expected as soon as Monday.

“Today in my conversation with the Chinese I made it very clear: That has not worked and we can not continue business as usual”, he said. It joined Japan, a non-permanent member of the Security Council, in calling for the December 6th emergency session.

Trump argued that North Korea’s claim that it successfully tested a hydrogen bomb last Wednesday is surprising given its leader’s age.

The broadcasts include popular Korean pop songs, world news and weather forecasts as well as criticism of the North’s nuclear test, its troubled economy and dire human rights conditions, according to Seoul’s Defense Ministry. At the square, soldiers stood under a banner that read: “We passionately celebrate the historic national event that is the success of the first hydrogen bomb test”. As a small country, we have suffered in the past, but now we have got a hydrogen bomb, there is nothing greater than this. “So I can entirely understand the pressure South Korea feels to respond”.

Another Pyongyang resident, Ri Chon Hyang, says the nuclear test made him happy.

For decades, the United States stationed tactical nuclear weapons in South Korea, officially removing them in 1991. “This gives strength and enthusiasm to all of us here as we are trying to make progress in the new year”.

Seoul announced that, as of midday Friday local time (10 p.m. Thursday evening ET), it has resumed broadcasting propaganda using loudspeakers over the demilitarized zone, the heavily guarded buffer between the two Koreas.

“Seismic signals from the January 2016 detonation at the North Korean nuclear facility bear an uncanny resemblance to the signals recorded for the February 12, 2013 detonation”, Jeffrey Park, a seismologist at Yale University wrote in a post on the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists website.

North Korean military forces often compete to show their loyalty to the leader. If the underground test is confirmed, it would be the North’s fourth nuclear test and its first of the H-bomb, which is more powerful than an atomic bomb.

The presence of xenon would not indicate whether the blast was from a hydrogen device or a simpler fission explosion.

The South stopped earlier broadcasts after it agreed with Pyongyang in late August on a package of measures aimed at easing animosities were among a variety of punitive measures being considered. “Sampling continues”, the CTBTO’s executive secretary, Lassina Zerbo, said on Twitter on Friday evening.

US intelligence-gathering aircraft have been taking off from an American air base in southern Japan, a day after North Korea said it tested a hydrogen bomb. The institute says, however, that the measured amount was too small to determine whether the North had really detonated a nuclear device. Moreover, Iran suffered no consequences to speak of from its recent violations of the Security Council resolutions prohibiting it from developing or testing ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said, “The initial analysis is not consistent with the North Korean claims”.

South Korea has blocked civilians from visiting a tourist observatory and other locations near the border with North Korea in response to tensions following the North’s purported nuclear test.

The Ministry of Unification says now is not the time to discuss the possibility of closing the Gaeseong Industrial Complex. But, we have to be bigger than the North Koreans and I would urge South Korea and other like-minded countries in the region to exercise restraint.
