U.S. Open victor Stan Wawrinka deserves seat at big table

A new roof was all the rage when the U.S. Open began two weeks ago but it was the crowning of a new world number one and two first-time champions that left their mark on a tournament that came to an emotional close on Sunday with a tribute to victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Prior to the final, 12-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic had a career 19-4 edge over Wawrinka.

Yes, Wawrinka owns those three all-important trophies and stands one Wimbledon title away from becoming the ninth man to complete a career Grand Slam; and, yes, he beat Djokovic en route to all three; and, yes, he is 3-0 in major finals; and, yes, he has beaten the owner of the No. 1 ranking in each of those; and, yes, he has won his past 11 tournament finals. “I was shaking in the locker room”, Wawrinka said.

“It just came like that”.

“Before the final I was really nervous like never before”.

“I don’t think it’s necessary for me to talk about that now”, he said.

Stan Wawrinka has pulled off a stunning victory over Novak Djokovic to win the US Open. The only plan is trying to push myself the maximum to be the best player I can.

After Djokovic took the first set in a tie-break, the Swiss showed his true mettle, breaking the defending champion early in the second, third and fourth sets.

She has become one of the game’s most recognizable figures in a season that has included an Australian Open triumph, a run to the Wimbledon final, an Olympic silver medal in singles and ending Serena Williams’s 186-week reign as world number one.

Tennis World would like to celebrate the last Major of the year with the best five matches played.

That is exactly what he did, and the result was his first U.S. Open title.

Wawrinka maintained his momentum and appeared primed to win the U.S. Open in the fourth set with a 3-1 lead when Djokovic used a medical timeout so he could receive treatment on his toe.

Djokovic called Wawrinka the “more courageous player”. “Physically, mentally, we had some tough conditions in the last few days”. “I’m completely empty; I had to bring everything I had today against Novak”. After the match win, it was nearly too much, I was really exhausted. Normally ruthless in converting break points, he slumped to 3-for-17.

Despite Djokovic’s physical issues, Wawrinka was a convincing champion. However her victory in three sets against Simona Halep in the quarter-final showed her great determination again.

Wawrinka trailed 5-2 in the first but won three straight games and forced a tiebreak.

The “terrible” 18 per cent conversion rate, Djokovic said, was the one of the worst he could remember.

“He likes to occasionally whack the ball quite hard, and I don’t think that Novak likes that”, said Wawrinka’s coach, Magnus Norman. “Today I was trying to stay with him”.

“It’s up to the officials to do something about it, and they just don’t have the guts to do it”.

After battling an arm injury during his first-round win over Czech player Jerzy Janowicz, Djokovic was the beneficiary of a walkover in round two before playing just six games in the third round before Mikhail Youhnzny pulled the pin. “We know each other (for) many, many years, and I had the chance to practice many times with him and to play him on a big stage”.
