As Sweden celebrated, US captain Carli Lloyd crouched on the field at Mane Garrincha Stadium.
“I’ve won and lost a lot of games in my career, and not all wins have been pretty”, Solo said.
At Rio 2016, Team USA were knocked out of the Women’s Soccer tournament and their goalkeeper, Hope Solo, went a couple of steps further. “I said. I don’t know, let’s look it up, so we got on the Internet”.
“As an 11-year-old she did come to me asking. why she had not seen many others like herself in a sport of swimming, ” Sharron said.
“I think it’s pretty obvious that Sweden took a tactic that most outmatched teams take in soccer”.
The loss is a devastating one for a team whose World Cup win previous year earned them a ticker tape parade in New York City. “I’m going to Rio, and she’s going home”.
“They didn’t want to open play”, Solo said, according to Sports Illustrated.
Sundhage, who coached the U.S.to gold medals in 2008 and 2012, reportedly responded, “I don’t give a crap”. On their fifth attempt, Christen Press, who came on for the United States in the 100th minute, missed horribly high of the net.
From there came overtime, when Carli Lloyd headed the ball past Swedish goalie Hedvig Lindahl in the 115th minute. As a result, Solo was booed by Brazilian fans almost every time she touched the ball throughout the Americans’ four Olympic games.
Sweden will be joined in the last four by Brazil who beat Australia 7-6 in an even more dramatic penalty shoot out. It was just her second global goal, and Sundhage reacted by high-fiving her assistants on the bench.
Sweden had won outright in only five prior matches against the United States.
After Mallory Pugh left late in the extra period with an injury, allowing Lindsey Horan’s entry, both teams had goals disallowed. “And we’re going home”. They didn’t want to play great soccer.
“Clearly passions run very, very high and sometimes people say things they regret”, he added. “And the fact that it went to penalty kicks says something about our defending”. Or they can remind us who Friday’s real cowards are.
Going up against their former coach, Pia Sundhage, the US women failed to connect on several quality chances in the first half.
In the 99th minute, Megan Rapinoe was subbed off for Christen Press.
Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana stands on the podium after winning the gold medal in the women’s 10,000-meter final during the athletics competitions of the 2016 Summer Olympics at the Olympic stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Friday, . We had that style of play when Pia was our coach.
Sweden will be joined in the semifinals by Germany, who beat China 1-0, and Canada, who overcame France by the same margin.
The Americans had a golden chance early in the second half, but after an exchange with Heath on a free kick just beyond the penalty area, Lloyd missed wide on a clear attempt.
“They tried to counter with long balls”.

The sad part is that when the storm around Solo dies down, she manages to set it alight again with nonsense like demeaning Sweden following its extraordinary victory or making a joke of Zika and then rolling into Brazil and claiming she’d been seriously concerned about it.
