One family in St. Petersburg, Fla., reported that a Galaxy Note 7 left charging in their Jeep had caught fire, destroying the vehicle.

Samsung has received 92 reports of the batteries overheating in the USA, including 26 reports of burns and 55 of property damage, according to the US commission’s website. There were reports of exploding phones due to faulty batteries, and one minor burn injury.

Following the cautionary statement, American airlines have been asking passengers to turn their Note7 phones off for the duration of flights.

But the carriers aren’t the only places selling the phones, and without a formal government recall, many U.S. Note 7 owners were stuck on hold because there was no legal obligation to go along.

The company last week advised people to stop using the device.

In a half-page ad carried by major South Korean newspapers on Wednesday, Samsung announced a Note 7 software update that will limit battery recharges to 60 percent of capacity.

But many users have snubbed the offer, choosing to wait until the new phones were available, citing the inconvenience of switching devices for an interim period. “There is not a restocking fee on the Note 7 and exchanges and returns will be honored regardless of the condition of the Note 7”, said Emily Edmonds, the director of corporate communications for AT&T.

While most comments will be posted if they are on-topic and not abusive, moderating decisions are subjective. It’s an excellent phone.

“I’ve never had an issue with Samsung before so I’m not going to hold this against them”. The 23-year-old said he’s now using an old phone borrowed from a friend, which he said was “really impractical”.

The group said “consumers should immediately stop using and power down the recalled Galaxy Note 7 devices” and contact the location where they purchased the devices to either get a new Note 7, a refund or a replacement device.

Kaye said consumers should check the identifying number on the back of the phone at Samsung.com to determine whether their phone has a defective battery.

Only about 130,000 units have so far been returned as part of an exchange program that Samsung kicked off almost two weeks ago. This week, New York City’s transit system followed suit. Doing so may result in civil and/or criminal penalties.
