U.S., South Korea to seek strong punishment over North’s nuclear test
The North Koreans also have a knack for timing: The latest test comes at a time when China is irate at South Korea and the United States over plans to deploy an advanced missile system in the South, a move many Chinese hawks could view as equally provocative as the North’s nuclear tests.

“North Korea’s nuclear test is a risky escalation and poses an unacceptable threat”, Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, U.S. Forces Korea commander, said in a statement Tuesday.
South Korea and the United States have insisted that the North should give up its nuclear weapons before resuming dialogue, but there is speculation that China and Russian Federation might push for talks without pre-conditions.
Washington called the demonstration “just one example of the full range of military capabilities”.
Beijing’s official People’s Daily newspaper on Wednesday called the United States a troublemaker and said it has no right to lecture China about taking responsibility for reining in North Korea as tensions on the peninsula are a direct result of US actions.
North Korea’s pursuit of missiles and nuclear weapons is one of the most intractable foreign policy problems for the US and South Korea.
The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a report more than 35,500 homes were damaged, two-thirds of them completely destroyed, and 107,000 people had been displaced by the floods. “Now is the time for the Obama administration to robustly enforce all sanctions tools at its disposal and to redouble its efforts to strengthen security guarantees and defense relationships with unshakable allies like South Korea and Japan”.
Those missions covered more than 7,000 hours of flight time.
The B-1 bombers used in the fly-over had been used repeatedly in operations in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, some of which were supposed ISIS hunts.
The United States wants China to do more, with U.S. Defence Secretary Ash Carter last week singling out the role he said China should play in curbing its neighbour. “The B-1 bomber is specifically suited for the Pacific region”, Lt. Col. Seth Spanier, commander of the B-1 squadron on Guam, said. “The US should take due responsibility and search for solutions”.
Park issued the warning when she met the leaders of opposition political parties to appeal for a united front against what she called the North’s “maniacal obsession” with building a nuclear arsenal. After North Korea’s fourth nuclear test in January, a Guam-based B-52 made the flight.
“They are bluffing that B-1Bs are enough for fighting an all-out nuclear war”, said a statement from Pyongyang’s Korean Central News Agency.

China must help the global community close loopholes in sanctions on North Korea after an “unprecedented” series of provocations by Pyongyang this year, a top United States envoy said on Tuesday.
