U.S. store sales down slightly for Thanksgiving and Black Friday

Latest data show that online shoppers splurged more on commodities at Thanksgiving Day this year than they used to for the holiday.

Before the hitches retail analyst Experian-IMRG predicted Black Friday online spending would hit a record £1.07bn, a 32% increase on last year’s £810m.

TheStreet also observed solid traffic during several visits to Apple stores on Long Island, New York on the evening of Black Friday, a key shopping time as people head out after work in search of deals.

“We did a lot of the stuff on the internet”, said Hicks.

The online rush comes as Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Macy’s Inc. and other chains roll out their Black Friday specials, aiming to get more shoppers into stores.

As Cyber Monday illustrates, “there’s not a conversation about retail today without talking about digital”, Berry said.

“This year, we saw Black Friday ads emerge before Halloween”, he said, and in-store sales were bigger in the days leading up to Black Friday, “which is a result of retailers successfully elongating the holiday season”.

This year, the Black Friday sales come in the context of weak retail revenues blamed in part on relatively warm weather that has discouraged cold-weather purchases.
