The National Weather Service in Huntsville warned residents to avoid driving in areas where flooding was expected.
Northern Alabama, which has been pounded by downpours since Wednesday, was under flood warnings Saturday night.
Police in Birmingham, Alabama, say people are trapped in houses along Jefferson Avenue Southwest, where a tornado touch down earlier Friday evening.
Peak tornado season in the South is in the spring, but storms can happen any time.

More than a dozen tornadoes were reported in six states, with the southern states of MS and Alabama hardest hit.
