The Storm Prediction Center said Wednesday night the greatest risk of tornadoes the rest of the day was to people in middle Tennessee, extreme southern Kentucky, and parts of northern Alabama and northeast Mississippi.
Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant declared a state of emergency in seven counties.
One year ago a tornado hit south-eastern MS, killing five people and injuring dozens more.
The tornado touched down near Clarksdale, the service said. “We are still in search-and-rescue mode”.
“It’s very ugly; it’s very scary”, Wilson said.
At least 40 people were injured across the state, and at least six counties reported damage from the twisters.
A 7-year-old boy died in Holly Springs when the storm picked up and tossed the auto he was riding in, officials said.
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokesman Greg Flynn said Thursday a 35-person team was out looking for the two unaccounted people in Benton County, where he said at least two people died in the storms. Anderson said the boy was in a auto with his family near Holly Springs, where a tornado came through the area.
At least four people were injured in the unincorporated area of Coahoma County known as Bellview, Board of Supervisors President Paul Pearson said.
Emergency officials were checking for possible tornado damage before dawn on Christmas Eve in southeast Alabama after the National Weather Service said radar showed what appeared to be a mass of debris from a tornado. One particular twister did most of the damage, starting in MS and ending in western Tennessee.
The wind tore the back of Johnson’s Holly Springs house from its foundation and multiple sheds were missing afterward, he said.
NPR’s Debbie Elliott tells our Newscast unit that portions of Interstate 55 were closed due to tornado warnings, and there are reports of an overturned tractor-trailer in north Mississippi. Rescuers pulled the toddler safely from the home.
A tree blew over onto a house in Arkansas, killing an 18-year-old woman and trapping her 1-year-old child inside, authorities said.
Just two days from Christmas in the USA, there were 19 tornado reports in Mississippi, Tennessee, Indiana and IL by 7pm on Wednesday (2pm, Thursday, NZ time).

Slabs of metal were tangled in drooping power lines, dangling precariously alongside the road, and the smell of freshly overturned dirt and trees lingered in the air as emergency crews tended to downed power lines. The woman and her 1 ½-year-old sister were sleeping in a bedroom of the house near Atkins about 65 miles northwest of Little Rock, when winds uprooted the tree that crashed through the roof.
“It’s unusual but certainty not unprecedented to see severe weather similar to this in December”, says Meteorologist Greg Carbin at the national Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla.
But Mosier says the storm system is indicating that the strong tornados are seemingly beginning to wind down.
