U.S. teen wins first gold of Olympic games in Rio

Thrasher’s triumph came before midday local time on Day 1 of the Games, putting the U.S. into an immediate lead in the gold medal count with the unexpected triumph. “And to have somebody who, this will be his fourth Olympics, that level of experience – and he’s still a great player – and commitment, it’s a godsend, really”, US coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

KOSOVO FIRST: Majlinda Kelmendi won Kosovo’s first Olympic medal, taking gold in the women’s 52-kilogram judo division. The Americans haven’t medaled since they claimed bronze in Los Angeles 32 years ago.

– USA tennis player Jack Sock lost his opening match to Japan’s Taro Daniel 6-4, 6-4.

Olympic athletes have been competing in near empty venues and before thin crowds in other locations during the opening days of the Rio Games – a problem that can be traced to long security lines, traffic and a lack of familiarity in some sports.

The Olympics Only Just Began, But Team USA Already Won Its First Gold Medal in an Upset
