U.S. women’s water polo gold has SoCal written all over it
And then? Then Adam Krikorian coached the U.S. team to the most impressive and devastating Olympic water polo tournament run in history. The U.S. will face Italy in the gold medal match on Friday.

Australia led after the first quarter, and had a two goal lead midway through the second before Spain caught up to tie the game 7-7 at the half.
It was a particularly poignant victory for U.S. coach Adam Krikorian, who travelled home on August 3 following the death of his brother before returning ahead of the competition. On Aug. 3, Krikorian’s brother, Blake, a renowned tech entrepreneur, died suddenly of a heart attack while surfing.
“I tried to just think of it as any other game but I definitely felt myself more nervous than I’d ever been and more happy than I’d ever been”, Johnson told NBC 6 after the match.
But it’s a journey Krikorian insisted on finishing.
Blakes 49th birthday would have been Thursday, and Krikorians wife, Anicia Mendez, surprised him in Rio to be there with him for the sad day and then the final.
When it ended, the 13 women lined up on the side of the pool and, one by one, draped their goal medals around their coach’s neck.
“I don’t really know how to express myself fully right now, but it’s really cool”, said hero of the hour Simanovich after collecting her medal, while Hungary coach Attila Biro put on a fearless face after their latest Olympic disappointment: “We are happy we belong to the top four sides here at the Olympic Games, but we feel disappointment because we had the medal in our hand”. Some have worked for their entire lives for this moment. “It’s emotional because I love them so much and I don’t want it to end”.
The big question is the status of Krikorian, who said he wasn’t sure if he would continue with the national team. The U.S. has now won a medal in all five Olympics that women have played water polo.
With the US paying close attention to Barbara Bujka in the middle, captain Rita Keszthelyi scored four times as Hungary became the first country to reach double digits against the USA since Spain got 10 goals in a loss to the Americans on June 9.
Knox scored four goals over the course of six games, each one coming in a different game.
The Barcelona striker scored 15 seconds into the game and converted a penalty kick in second-half injury time to lead Brazil over Honduras 6-0 in the semifinals.
On the play of goalkeeper Ashleigh Johnson: “She’s incredible”.
The gold medal game will take place Friday at 2:30 p.m. ET.
No group has ever performed better. Friday’s win ran the Americans’ season record to 40-2 and their winning streak to 21 games.
The U.S. has won every major tournament since 2014 including the FINA World Championship, FINA World Cup, Pan American Games title and three FINA World League Super Final titles.
The teams finished tied in kills (58-58) while the US led in blocks (16-7) and Italy led in aces (10-5).
“I think it’s going to hit me pretty hard later today”, he said.
You could also make an argument that the team, with an average age of 23, hasn’t peaked yet. Three players are still teenagers; one is still in high school. He made it nine for nine. But after a few less-than-stellar results, she reached back out to Coach Krikorian to see if the invitation was still open.

“Everything the last three weeks, it’s been a whirlwind”, he said.
