An intensifying winter storm that is forecast to cause an historic blizzard in the Washington, D.C. area has also spawned severe weather in states from Texas to Florida along the Gulf Coast.

Weather satellites jointly managed by NOAA and NASA have been watching the development of winter storm Jonas as it gains steam over the middle of the country.
Storm Jonas was cranking up to make winter wonderlands out of much of the South and eastern US over the weekend, and several concerts were postponed citing weather concerns. The National Weather Service in Charleston has issued a winter storm warning for various areas across the state through Saturday.
The storm is expected to bring 6 to 10 inches of heavy snow to all five boroughs, coastal portions of northeast New Jersey, and Long Island, along with strong, potentially damaging winds.
The latest space views of the winter storm from NOAA’s GOES-East satellite show the U.S. East Coast as of 1:30 p.m. EST (1830 GMT) today (Jan. 22).
Syracuse at Virginia (originally Jan. 23 at noon) is rescheduled to Jan. 24 at 7 p.m., and the Cavs’ second game of the week – initially scheduled at Wake Forest on Jan. 25 at 9 p.m. has been moved to Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.
It’s expected around one in seven Americans will get at least 15 cm of snow outside their homes once the storm has passed. Bands of significant snowfall could stretch as far north as Boston.
