Corbyn is in the middle of a battle against Owen Smith to keep his job as leader of the party.

Labour’s 515,000 members from across the United Kingdom will begin voting in the leadership election towards the end of August, with the result to be announced on Saturday, September 24 at the party’s conference.

Mr Corbyn said: “It is crucial for both energy security and tackling climate change that we give the most serious investment and incentives to high-tech R&D”.

The two MPs, who are friends, have nominated Mr Smith according to the party website although Corbyn is favourite to be re-elected as leader when the result is announced at the party conference in Liverpool on September 24.

“He also made the point that it might put pressure on some people who might not have wanted to return to come back”.

The Labour source added: “Clive said we’ve got to find a way to work together because we have a respoonsibility to all those people who have supported Labour in previous elections”.

Thousands of people gathered in Ramsgate this afternoon to hear Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn speak about his plans to invest in the south east.

Even if Betts’ motion is voted through, it is by no means certain to come into being.

A spokesman for Mr Corbyn suggested the party could consider giving members a vote on the make-up of the shadow cabinet.

Any final decision will have to be approved by the ruling National Executive Committee and at party conference.

It is the latest endorsement from the arts for Corbyn, who unveiled a series of pledges to boost British culture last month, and is increasingly confident of a resounding win against challenger Owen Smith. “Any review also needs to take account of the need to represent regions and nations”.
