Uber faces legal action over workers’ rights

An Uber spokesperson told the Guardian that the company’s drivers were not permitted to wait on airport grounds so they stayed in the surrounding streets until customers who summoned rides were in a place where they could be picked up.

Uber Technologies has launched its personal auto leasing subsidiary in an effort to enroll extra drivers, injecting the quick-rising journey services firm immediately into the financial services sector for the primary time.

Mayor Jason Bienski announced they would not take action on the ordinance that would ensure that Uber and taxi drivers play by the same rules. Drivers routinely log into the passenger app to get a feel for where other cars are located.

The drivers claim that Uber does not provide its drivers with the rights normally afforded to employees.

Leigh Day lawyer Nigel Mackay said: “Uber not only pays the drivers but it also effectively controls how much passengers are charged and requires drivers to follow particular routes”.

Despite an overwhelming amount of taxi drivers giving up their normal job to join Uber, there seems to be issues with the way Uber classifies its workers. Uber should also ensure its drivers take rest breaks and do not work over a maximum number of hours per week.

Uber has denied claims its application misleads users by displaying “phantom cars” which don’t actually exist.

Although he condemned the actions of rioting taxi drivers as “inexcusable”, President Francois Hollande said then that Uber was an example of “unfair competition” and called for its dissolution. “As employees, drivers would drive set shifts, earn a fixed hourly wage, and lose the ability to drive elsewhere”.

A mob of irate cab drivers calling for a total halt to app-based auto services throughout Mexico City assaulted several Uber cars with metal bars and rocks earlier this week to protest the company’s presence. It isn’t clear how many Uber drivers are members of the union.

“Despite recent changes to the document system, it is still possible to upload a fake insurance document without detection”, Steve Garelick, branch secretary for the professional drivers division of GMB, said.

“Operators must understand that they have an ethical and social policy that matches societies expectations of fair and honest treatment”. Valid concern or not, it’s unlikely that Uber’s drivers would be too pleased if the company generating their income was no longer allowed to operate.
