Uber launches taxi-hailing button for third-party app developers

Uber isn’t just trying to expand to other cities – it wants to invade other apps. Interested developers need to register their app with the Uber Developer Dashboard and then install the new Uber Android/iOS Rides SDK.

It’s not hard to understand why developers might consider integrating an Uber button into their apps. Uber integration first showed up in Google Maps, as another option on the public transportation page of navigation options; not long after, the Uber API launched to allow any third-party software a way to add support. The new SDK makes it far easier for any app to make use of the Ride Request Button.

Today, the ride-hailing company is announcing a new offer to app developers to add a button to their app that, when tapped, allows users to request an Uber driver. This led to “lots of testing to ensure the deep links worked correctly, determining if the [Uber] app is installed and, if not, building an alternative link to the app store and creating a visual treatment for it all”.

What types of apps can benefit from the Uber Ride Request Button? “This could take a lot of trial and error, and lots of effort”. In the first example above, a restaurant app could pass along a restaurant’s address as the destination.

For instance, you look up restaurants and tap on a button next to the address to order a cab straight to that address. “This will help you offer a differentiated feature for your users, provide a magical experience for riders and even earn additional revenue your business”.

It’s a relatively beneficial tool for Uber users, and app developers get a bonus too.
