The tie-up will make Uber to provide details of prospective commercial driver partners to Maruti Suzuki and the auto company will then take them through a specialized training module, which would last for 30 days and will include theoretical training, practical training and post-training assessments.
The initiative will also help trained drivers receive commercial licenses, vehicle financing and leasing solutions.
Based on the outcome of the pilot project, the partnership will be expanded to other cities across India, the statement said.
The scheme was launched at the 9th Global Skills Summit at FICCI.
Uber has announced its new initiative that aims at creating opportunities as micro-entrepreneurs in India by 2018 dubbed UberSHAAN.
Under UberShaan program, Uber India expects to offer over 1 million livelihood opportunities by 2018 while Maruti Suzuki will offer training to enhance driving skills. This initiative is looking to train the unskilled and eventually provide economic opportunities across the spectrum.
The pilot phase will be rolled out in Hyderabad, Chennai and Delhi-NCR, and thereafter, be introduced in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Pune. Uber will be responsible for the pre-assessment tests, while successive training stages will be undertaken by Maruti.
The drivers will get to familiarise themselves with basic requirements such as vehicle controls and mechanisms, road signage, rules and markings, driving in hard conditions and maintenance of the vehicle in the theory part. Drivers will be taught vehicle control and mechanisms, road signs and markings besides rules and regulations of safe driving.
On the launch of the UberSHAAN initiative, Shri Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, said, “The partnership between NSDC & Uber is a shining example of PPP (Public Private Partnership) in action”.
Uber would also be at an advantage because of the fact that Maruti Suzuki has been imparting driver training since 2000. The company has 6 Institutes of Driving and Training Research besides 370 Maruti Driving Schools spread across the country. While the MDS focuses on personal auto driving, the IDTR additionally trains drivers for commercial driving including trucks, buses and other heavy motor vehicles and taxi & three-wheelers.
