Uber rape accused convicted

An Indian court Tuesday (Oct 20) convicted an Uber driver of raping a young female passenger in the capital past year, his lawyer and the public prosecutor said, in a high profile case that sparked fresh safety fears in a city plagued by sexual violence.

Taxi driver Shiv Kumar, was facing a trial on charges of raping a 25-year-old woman in an Uber cab.

The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on 23 October.

He had stated there was enough proof on report to maintain Yadav responsible within the case and not one of the 28 prosecution witnesses has spoken opposite to the police case.

He also alleged that false evidence was planted to implicate his client and that the woman had changed her statements before the court and police. The victim, in her appeal, said that the high court order amounts to a re-trial of the case.

The court convicted him for offences of endangering a woman’s life while raping, abducting and criminally intimidating her.

All charges have been proved against Yadav.
