Uber’s New Update Gives Food Delivery As Much Attention As Transportation

While the move doesn’t change any of the actual functionality of UberEats, it definitely shows that the company is getting serious about food delivery.

Uber is making it a lot easier to get lunch delivered with just a few taps.

Uber is officially launching UberEATS in its hometown – San Francisco – this week, offering meals via curbside deliveries from several restaurants.

Instead of simply being another ride option at the bottom, UberEATS is now its own section on the app – right next the the regular ride-hailing button.

UberEATS was first launched in Los Angeles last year and is now available in Barcelona, Toronto, Chicago, Austin, and New York City. Uber is still in the process of rolling out this update, so don’t fret if you don’t see it just yet.

Uber however is attempting to bridge a gap in these services and is promising to deliver restaurant food within 10 minutes.

Uber’s emphasis on food delivery not only marks food delivery as Uber’s second major category, analysts at Cowen said in a note Monday, but it could also pose a huge challenge to food delivery stalwart GrubHub Seamless.

UberEATS is now up and running in six cities.

Though UberEATS is a feature available inside of Uber’s main app, the analysts add, they predict that Uber’s food delivery services could be spun off into a standalone app in the future.

Industry watchers say that the expansion of the UberEATS model is an indication of just how seriously Uber takes the delivery sector.
