Uber Starts Motorbike-Hailing Service, Picks Thailand For Launch
Uber says it chose to launch its program in Bangkok because motorbikes are already a popular form of transportation there, and because of the city’s notorious traffic problems.

The company said in the statement, “UberMoto service is specifically developed for cities in emerging markets where congestion is high, so it seems plausible that UberMoto may be extended to new cities and countries over time”.
UberMOTO will initially launch in Bangkok and users will be able to order motorcycle taxis through the Uber app in the same way as they do when ordering a regular Uber. “With UberMOTO, we’re thrilled to introduce a product that resonates with Thai people while creating tens of thousands of flexible work opportunities for Thais”.
While it is not uncommon to take a motorbike taxi and not be given a helmet to wear, Uber – like Grab – said its drivers will carry one for passengers.
The service, called UberMOTO, launched as a pilot program in Bangkok. The rides will be available at a base rate of ฿10 ($0.28), plus ฿3.5 a kilometer ($0.10) and ฿0.85 a minute ($0.02).
The service will first launch in Sathorn, Siam and Silom.
Until March 15, first-time Uber users will get two rides worth up to 100 baht for free, by using code “UberMOTOBKK”.
Wednesday’s announcement is being seen as Uber’s latest move to fend off intense competition in Asia, driven by well-funded ride-hailing apps like China’s Didi Kuaidi, India’s Ola and Southeast Asia-focused Grab.

Uber has also partnered up with Thai Traffic Police to raise awareness of motorcycle safety, and will be donating helmets to young students and adults.
