Napolitano accepted Katehi’s resignation Tuesday.

SAN FRANCISCO The embattled chancellor of the University of California, Davis resigned on Tuesday, the university system president said, after allegations the school spent $175,000 to quash negative internet posts prompted an ethics probe. The investigation is to be completed no later than August 1, but the findings have not been announced.

Burtis, a professor of genetics and past dean of the College of Biological Sciences, has served as faculty adviser to the chancellor and provost since 2011.

Since April, Ralph Hexter has been acting as the school chancellor.

Guzman said the investigation cleared Katehi of all charges.

Katehi will return to her position on the UC Davis faculty, in accordance with the terms of her contract.

Napolitano’s office said the investigation “found the chancellor had exercised poor judgement, not been candid with University leadership, and violated multiple University policies”.

A search for Katehi’s successor will begin immediately.

Katehi told Napolitano and the Sacramento Bee’s editorial board that she was “not aware of these particular contracts” and not involved in the contracts.

The report also concluded that Katehi played no role in the employment of her son and daughter-in-law, although it found that she failed to exercise diligence and judgment in joining the boards related to two outside universities.

The report released today, however, was not focused on her dealings surrounding the pepper spraying of students. These past three months and the events leading up to them have been an unhappy chapter in the life of UC Davis. I then placed Chancellor Katehi on immediate administrative leave and authorized the hiring of an outside firm to investigate a number of concerns.

The move follows an investigation into Katehi’s conduct that was launched by Napolitano on April 27, the same day she suspended Katehi with pay. “I think it frustrated students that she held on, especially with paid leave”.
