If he wins the award, he would become the first quarterback from TCU to receive the honor named for the former TCU quarterback who won the 1938 Heisman Trophy. Russell leads the nation in points responsible for per game with 30.0, Boykin is second with 26.0, and Mahomes and Mayfield come in at fifth and sixth in the country with 22.2 and 21.8 respectively. He’s been especially deadly in the red zone with 16 touchdown passes, five rushing touchdowns and no interceptions. Russell was voted as one of the semifinalists but will miss the remainder of the season because of a neck injury. He has thrown for 2,361 passing yards before halftime this season, which is more yards than 104 FBS teams have thrown for in their entire seasons so far.

His next big challenge awaits Saturday at Stillwater, Okla., when the Horned Frogs travel to meet No. 12 Oklahoma State. He has been the key factor in Baylor’s NCAA-best offense that has produced 686.1 yards and 61.1 points per game.

Semifinalists were chosen by the O’Brien National Selection Committee, with a fan vote accounting for five percent of the total vote.

Both awards will announce three finalists each on November 24, with the winners of the two prestigious honors to be announced on Thursday, December 10, on The Home Depot College Football Awards show on ESPN. He ranks second nationally passing touchdowns (29) and passing yards per completions (17.68).
