Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates with the trophy after the Champions League final soccer match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid at the San Siro stadium in Milan, Italy, Saturday, May 28, 2016.

Sergio Ramos himself gave Real Madrid the lead in the 15th minute. However, Atletico striker Antoine Griezmann missed the chance to tie the score, as he missed the penalty kick.

Atletico, beaten in their two previous final appearances, including the most recent against Real in 2014, suffered a series of let-offs before substitute Yannick Carrasco rifled in the equaliser in the 79th minute to send the game into extra time.

Early in extra time, Ronaldo wasted a good chance when his downward header struck defender Filipe Luis and looped into Oblak’s hands.

Real coach Zinedine Zidane and Atletico counterpart Diego Simeone had kept to the script with no real surprises in their respective line-ups for the final.

The French icon becomes the seventh man to win the cup both as a player and as a manager.

With Real Madrid fans wearing the club colours, players celebrated on the open top bus and at the end, Sergio Ramos, the club captain, tied a Real Madrid scarf around Cybele fountain – as is customary for the club and its celebrations.

Cristiano Ronaldo says he had a vision that he was going to score the winning penalty in the Champions League final.

“I would like to dedicate a few words to Atletico, our neighbour and friend”, he said.

“When you achieve what we’ve achieved all season it means you’ve done well, that the messages have got through, that the players have followed me and that I’ve followed them”.

“It puts a lot of years on you”, he added.

Real Madrid didn’t really overcome the odds so much as did what they were expected to do by beating Atletico Madrid on Saturday night.

“[On Perez], I won’t live forever, but I’m proud of the way he chairs the club”.

“We wanted the first twenty minutes very fast, very high pressure”.

“It’s hard, it’s the end of the season, people are not fit any more so we have to rest now and do it for European Championship”, said Ronaldo.
