UFC Fight Night 73: Saint Preux vs. Teixeira – Preview and Predictions

The first two preliminary fights are on UFC Fight Pass at 7 p.m. ET. The victory halted Teixeira’s two-fight losing streak. It was an exciting fight and Teixeira showed that he is going no where but up in the light heavyweight division. After a bit of damage done from the top, Teixeira took advantage of another OSP mistake, as Saint Preux gave up his back and left the opening for the rear naked choke.

In a race, weight-lifting competition or any other test of strict athleticism, Saint-Preux takes this all day but this is a fight and in that realm, Teixeira is superior.

Glover Teixeira reminded everyone why he earned that title shot a year ago. If the Brazilian comes out all guns blazing, we could see this counter stop the fight early. St. Preux went out on his shield in his hometown, refusing to tap and instead passing out to the choke. Michael Johnson faced off with Beneil Dariush in the co-main, and the rest of the card featured some quality fights and nice finishes. “He’s an explosive fighter, I can’t sleep in front of him”.

Good win for Jared Rosholt, grinding out another victory against Tim Johnson, but can’t help but feel like poor Fight IQ from the man with the tremendous duster was the actual turning point. The explosive fighter’s approach is extremely unorthodox, and OSP has acknowledged as much. The loss snapped Johnson’s run of eight straight wins. “I just wanted to put a show for y’all”. On his feet, he’s a brutal power puncher with a brick chin.

After some solid striking work to begin round two, Teixeira took the fight to the mat in the second minute, continuing to drain the gas tank of the hometown hero with his top game and ground strikes.

Let me be clear about this: Johnson won the fight; he dictated the tempo and placement of the fight and landed the heavier shots in both the first and second rounds.

Dustin Ortiz told me in advance of his fight that he wanted to make a statement and deliver a dominant performance and that’s exactly what he did. Nunes is easily the better striker when compared to McMann, but McMann’s wrestling is her best weapon and she grounds Nunes to earn a decision win.

UFC FN 73 will be hosted by the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Both fighters are excellent athletes and very good grapplers as well.
