UK Labour MP says ready for leadership challenge; Corbyn clings on

Last week more than three-quarters of Labour MPs, 172 in total, voted that they had no confidence in his leadership, with only 40 voting in his favour.

Angela Eagle has delivered a clear threat to Jeremy Corbyn that she will mount a leadership challenge if he does not step down.

A shadow cabinet source has said that any leadership challenge could be postponed until after Mr Watson reports on his talks at a meeting of the parliamentary party on Monday.

That makes it hard for Angela Eagle, the former shadow business secretary who had previously publicly announced that she was preparing to challenge Corbyn, to take any action before the weekend.

A young Labour member from Milton Keynes has written an open letter to Labour councillors in support of Jeremy Corbyn.

“Only nine months ago, I was very honored to be elected leader of our party with 60 percent of the votes”, Corbyn said in a video published on Monday.

Speaking on Sunday Politics East, Zeichner – who supported Yvette Cooper in last year’s leadership election – said that the embattled Corbyn should remain the leader of the party “for as long as he’s elected to be leader of the Labour Party by the members”.

“Since the referendum there’s sort of been mass hysteria in virtually all our political parties and I can’t completely understand it”.

“I have made clear I am ready to reach out to Labour MPs who oppose my leadership – and work with the whole party to provide the alternative the country needs”, Corbyn said.

“I’ve said on the BBC before I’d never say never to taking up the opportunity to lead the party”, the Streatham MP told BBC Radio 2.

Senior Labour sources outside the leader’s office said there had been “lengthy talks between Len and Tom” and added: ‘They have broken up now because there are internal party meetings to go to buy will reconvene later. My job is to do the best I can for the West Midlands.

And Mr Smith said: “Over the last week, I have been contacted by hundreds of Labour members and MPs deeply anxious that the Labour Party is truly in danger of splitting apart”.

Both were said have agreed to hold back while there was still a chance of a negotiated settlement which would see Mr Corbyn finally walk away. “They have made it clear that he can not give the leadership that is vital to gain credibility and national appeal for our party”.
