President Barack Obama reportedly visited London’s Globe Theatre on Saturday, April 23rd, in honor of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.
The US president was treated to scenes from Hamlet on his early morning visit to the venue, a reconstruction on the banks of the River Thames of a theatre dating back to the 16th century.
President Barack Obama on Friday huddled with Prime Minister David Cameron, a key stop on his campaign to add political firepower to the British leader’s struggling effort to keep his country from voting to…
“That was wonderful. I don’t want it to stop”, Mr Obama said of the tale of the melancholy prince before shaking hands with the actors.
Stratford, where Shakespeare was born and died, kicked off the day’s merriment with a parade of performers wearing pantaloons, ruffs and codpieces through its historic streets, ending at his grave.
After leaving the theater, Obama participated in the town hall, met privately with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and was driven an hour outside the city, past famous London landmarks, to squeeze in his regular round of weekend golf.
Dominic Dromgoole, outgoing artistic director of the Globe, put Shakespeare’s timeless appeal down to “fantastic stories that sit at the heart of human experience in all forms”.
“You’re doing a great job”, the president told Spottiswoode.
Although celebrations are held every year at this time to commemorate Shakespeare’s life, organisers this year promised something extra-special.
The birthday celebration begins at 1 p.m.in the lobby of University Theatre on the Boulder campus and will include a Shakespeare poster for people to decorate, a magnetic poetry window, a Shakespearean insult generator, a “Guess that Shakespeare” game with actors and cupcakes decorated with Shakespearean text.
Children now studying at the school are carrying a quill to the Globe in London by cycling, rowing, and running the 100-mile (165-kilometre) journey.
“Everyone knows about “Romeo and Juliet”, about “Hamlet” and “King Lear”.
Obama said keeping USA citizens safe is his top priority and he suggested that it should also top the list for whomever Americans elect in November due, in part, to the threat posed by the Islamic State group and other extremist organizations.
