UK military helps combat flooding as it spreads to cities
Emergency teams have worked overnight to evacuate people from homes in York, as flooding continues to hit many parts of northern England.

Prime Minister David Cameron said he would send more members of the military to assist families caught up in the post-Christmas chaos after he hosted a conference call of the government’s Cobra emergency committee. Theirs is a nightmare which will last for many months as they begin the thankless task of repairing properties which suffered untold damage when rivers burst their banks, and breached defences where they exist, after rising to record levels.
Those at risk are also reminded that the Agency’s Flood Incident room is open and they may call the Floodline 24/7 on 0345 988 1188. Erica Hammill, who runs Hotel 53 with her husband, Michael, in the Piccadilly area of the city, said hotel guests had to climb out of ground floor windows to escape the flooding.
Resources are thin. Officials said 85 percent of Britain’s flood defense barriers have already been deployed to the Cumbria area, in the far northwestern corner of England.
The Leeds Central MP Hilary Benn, Labour’s former Environment Secretary, said many businesses in his city had been damaged and, although the torrent of water had slowed, some of his neighbours were asked to leave their homes as a precaution.
But in 2011, the Coalition Government announced it would spend 8% less on flood defences – £540 million – over the next four years compared with the previous four years.
Defence projects in Leeds and York – which are now seeing floods – were among those put on hold.
Flood warnings have also been issued for the River Ouse in the city centre.
“My priority is making sure we have a good response effort, that we give families, communities all the help they need to make sure that we protect lives and we protect people’s homes”. Rescue crews have been using boats to help remove people from their homes.
Britain’s government was holding emergency talks on Sunday as flooding in northern England forced hundreds of people to leave their homes, including in the historic tourist destination of York.
People in West Yorkshire have been evacuated form their homes as nearly the entire average rainfall for December fell in just a 24-hour period on Boxing Day.
The Guardian newspaper said Monday that “empty rhetoric and even the army can not substitute for coherent policy on flood prevention”.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has also issued seven flood alerts and 16 flood warnings while the UK’s Met Office issued a yellow warning of rain for parts of north Wales, northern England and southern Scotland.

The operator said 9,500 properties remain without power, including 5,500 in Rochdale, 1,500 in Radcliffe, 1,500 in Padiham and 700 in Bury.
