British Prime Minister David Cameron’s decision to resign after losing the referendum vote on European Union membership will set off an intense Conservative Party leadership battle.
“The British vote poses a grave test for Europe, which must show solidity and strength in its response to the economic and financial risks”, Hollande said after meeting with his cabinet.
For Cameron, the turning point came in February when Johnson, a politician who has built a broad appeal beyond the ruling Conservative Party, threw his support behind the “Out” campaign in what several sources say was a calculated move to boost his chances of replacing the prime minister.
Cameron took office as prime minister in 2010 – serving his first term in a coalition government.
In the end, the bet paid off.
In a result that has sent shockwaves around the world, Leave won 51.9% of the total vote to Remain’s 48.1% after the final count.
The letter delivered to Downing Street was signed by 84 MPs, two thirds of whom openly backed the Leave campaign. He is expected to spend the weekend setting up his campaign team.
He gambled his career on backing Brexit knowing that a vote to leave would pretty much guarantee that a figure from that camp would become the next Conservative leader and by default, the next Prime Minister.
He rejected the idea that the vote is about pulling up the drawbridge, saying, “We can not turn our backs on Europe, we are part of Europe”.
The party is hardly united behind Johnson, though.
Like Mr Gove, Mr Hilton was also godfather to Ivan and has known Mr Cameron since their Oxford University days. A bombastic and effective campaigner, Johnson would be a force for a Conservative Party seeking to further conquer the centrist Liberals. It is unlikely, however, that leaving the European Union will do much to relieve Great Britain’s economic and social problems.
Meanwhile London Mayor Sadiq Khan released a statement saying he still believed London was better off within the European Union, and sending support to the city’s immigrants. “You are welcome here”, he said. He will certainly face a challenge from, among others, the Home Secretary Theresa May and possibly the new Work and Pensions Secretary Stephen Crabb.
But by the close of the markets Friday, sterling was still trading at levels not seen since the financial crash and the FTSE index of the 250 leading shares was down almost seven per cent on the day. A calculated politician who was previously considered a master electoral tactician, Osborne will have worked out that he can not now command sufficient support among MPs and likely will not stand.
Like many politicians, Cameron’s greatest strength was also his greatest weakness, however, and the ideological flexibility which was so useful in finding compromise also allowed him to cut corners and make injudicious promises. Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron announced Fr.
In the United Kingdom, researchers say that between 1993 and 2014, the foreign-born population more than doubled, to around 8.3 million from 3.8 million.
