UK’s May to meet Merkel for Brexit talks
Dominic Grieve said it is “extremely farfetched” to believe the government could “take a decision of such massive importance to the UK” without getting the approval of Parliament.

Theresa May will embark on a European charm offensive today as she prepares the ground for Britain’s crunch Brexit talks.
Britain’s Indian-origin Cabinet minister Priti Patel has vowed to work for deepening global partnerships and creating millions of jobs in the developing world.
“But we won’t be a government that is defined just by Brexit, we will also be a government defined by the social reform that we undertake”, she said, before colleagues banged their hands on the table in a traditional mark of appreciation.
Mrs May has the advantage of not being a Brexiteer, so remains untainted by those excesses, but Mrs Merkel will want to see a realistic assessment of where Britain stands on its future relations to the European Union, not listen to the PM building castles in the air about how Britain will make up any trade shortfalls by trade deals with the Commonwealth.
May is set to travel on to Paris for a meeting with Hollande on Thursday.
Mrs May is yet to move into Downing Street, where she will live in the larger No 11 flat.
It was “an opportunity to have early discussions with two of our most important European partners as we seek to build relations and look at the process for leaving the EU”.
It comes after she vowed in her first speech as Prime Minister last week to help working-class people who are “just managing” to cope with life.
A Downing Street spokesman said: “The Prime Minister will make her first overseas visits this week”. Many of those who voted to remain in the European Union will point to the fact that – in the leadership campaign in which she emerged victor – all the other candidates dropped out. That’s why I am here. The steel industry is vital to the United Kingdom and we will do everything we can to look after the workers and wider community as we work with Tata and the Welsh government. Ros Altmann, Cameron’s minister for pensions, was also dismissed, along with business minister Anna Soubry, a leading voice on the “remain” side during Britain’s recent European Union referendum campaign.
“We share a lot of common ground – we are all comprehensive school children and we laughed and smiled about that”.
Prior to the visit Mr Jones admitted he knew “very little” about the new Tory leader.
The meetings in Germany and France mark May’s first foreign trip since her appointment as prime minister in the wake of Britain’s referendum vote on 23 June.

“In the short-term, we also need Wales to get the same powers as the Scottish Parliament now has”.
