UK steel industry at critical crossroads

On the other, we see intensive efforts to woo the very country whose alleged dumping of cheap steel has contributed to bringing our own steel sector to its knees.

This month over 4,000 United Kingdom steel jobs have been lost or are at risk due to a combination of amid weak prices and high costs.

Stace told the select committee that the emissions directive was the easiest of five measures the industry wanted action on.

The Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) select committee hearing, set for tomorrow afternoon, will address the problems of cheap steel from China, rising energy costs, and a strong pound.

“We don’t seem able to find a solution”.

She said: “It’s not just about advancing the EII it’s also about working with other member states so that we can look at what more we can do. It is not enough”.

The British steel industry is in danger of incurring more job losses if the government does not take any measures to protect local producers, according to British media sources.

Tata Steel Europe’s human resources director Tor Farquhar warned of further losses, saying: “There are no guarantees, nothing can be ruled out”.

“While I don’t think it is helpful to speculate on which individual commercial organisations may be interested, I can assure you that we will work with all parties who could help with future investment in the plants”. Step in and support the industry to save our steel before it’s too late. “Failure to do so could have disastrous consequences for the remainder of the industry”. Instead of intervening to keep the coke ovens burning at Redcar, ministers sat on their hands and allowed a key industrial asset to close forever taking with it the livelihoods of thousands of people.

“Our message remains a loud and clear appeal to the Government to save our steel”.

“Time is rapidly running out and the steel industry needs assurances from Government that it is going to deliver on its promises. The Government needs to demonstrate that it has heard the steelworkers and employers’ concerns and that it understands the urgency of the situation”.

Urgent action across Europe is needed to tackle the crisis in the steel industry, Sajid Javid will tell officials in Brussels.

Mr Wright told her: “It just seems that the British Government, from the Prime Minister downward, is just having conversations rather than actions”.

The Business Secretary will call for an emergency summit with counterparts from across the European Union to respond to a series of setbacks which have left the British steel industry on the brink of collapse.
