Many users of Twitter around the world reported yesterday and early today that they were unable to access the microblogging site.

A Twitter spokeswoman said that the company will continue to post updates on its blog, but declined to elaborate on the cause behind the outage. US, European and Middle Eastern users appear to have been the victims of the latest Twitter outage, which has uncharacteristically lasted longer than a few hours.

This latest outage once again brings Twitter’s ongoing challenges into the spotlight. “Thanks for noticing”, read a message that appeared on users’ Twitter pages when the site had problems loading.

The issue was resolved at around 10.30am.

The site’s client apps, including Tweetdeck, were also prone to constant interruptions in service throughout the day.

Twitter’s API and Tumblr status pages reveal that this outage may be part of a larger issue, though the API page claims service is back to normal at this time. It’s believed the problem began at around 8 a.m. GMT (3 a.m. EST). “It’s a short-term outage that only makes Twitter more human”.

All kidding aside, the timing of an embarrassing, extended outage could not have been worse for the company, whose stock has lost almost a quarter of its value in the past month. Dorsey has also tried to broaden Twitter’s appeal, a problem the company has struggled with for years, much to the consternation of its investors. Twitter share have lost 66 percent of their value since peaking at $52.87 in April.
