People in Sanlitun, a busy bar, shopping and diplomatic district in the Chinese capital have been advised to “exercise heightened vigilance”.
There are no further details from governmental agencies about the nature of the threat.
A yellow alert is the second mildest under the four-coded alert system, which goes from green, yellow, orange to red in order of severity.
Security was tighter than usual on Thursday, with armed police posted outside Sanlitun’s shops barricades blocking the entrance to roads in embassy districts.
NPR’s Anthony Kuhn reports that authorities blanketed the Sanlitun embassy district in heavy security. In August, a lone attacker stabbed a French man and a Chinese woman there.
Security was tightened around the area, which is popular among foreigners and home to shops, bars and some embassies, on Thursday.
Security has also been beefed up at the US, UK and other Western embassies. Police commonly issue a yellow alert during holiday periods. Beijing blames them on Islamist militants and separatists of Xinjiang Uyghur region who are trying to establish an independent state called East Turkestan.
