Kiev previously hosted Eurovision in 2005 after Ukrainian singer Ruslana won the 2004 contest in Istanbul.

Six candidate cities made a bit to host the singing contest, with Kiev, Dnipro and Odessa making the final round.

But he walked back that statement on September 9, saying the two may have influenced the decision but were not a part of the final vote.

The decision was meant to be announced on August 26th, but the press conference was pulled at the last minute, which lead to fans of the Contest concerned that Ukraine might have pulled out of hosting the competition next year. “It was important that the city budget could cover the expenses by the state”.

The 2017 contest will be held in Kiev’s International Exhibition Centre, which has the capacity for 11,000 spectators. Three cities got through to the final: Kyiv, Odesa and Dnipro.

One of the longest running television shows in the world, the Eurovision Song Contest, will hold its 62nd edition in Ukraine.

Nyschuk said that while Dnipro, the third-place finisher, showed great enthusiasm for hosting the song contest, the eastern industrial city was considered to be “too close” to the front line of the ongoing conflict between Ukrainian government forces and Russia-backed separatists. The song was about the deportation of Crimean Tatars after the Second World War by the Soviet authorities, who had accused them of collaborating with the Nazis.
