Ukraine’s Oleg Verniaiev wins parallel bars gold

U.S. took the first set 25-16, and battled past a spirited Japan rally late in the second set to emerge with a 25-23 win. His 15.900 score in the parallel bars was his best of these Olympics after he posted a 15.600 in preliminaries and a 15.533 during the team event.

Verniaiev managed an impressive 16.041 for his parallel bars routine. He narrowly missed the gold in the all-around and settled for silver.

Leyva was the only American man competing on the parallel bars, though he is also set to compete on the horizontal bar later on Tuesday. Danell Leyva of the United States took the silver, while David Belyavskiy of Russian Federation earned the bronze. Biles took gold on vault and bronze on beam, and will compete in the floor exercise on Tuesday.

The U.S. moves onto play the victor of Serbia and Russian Federation on Friday.

Belyavskiy will also be taking home his second medal of these games after he earned silver in the team all-around. Earlier, Alex Naddour took the bronze on the pommel horse.

The Chinese men’s gymnastics team will leave Rio without a gold medal after world champion You Hao and Deng Shudi finished out of the medals.
