German plans to build a second pipeline – Nordstream 2 – to carry Russian gas under the Baltic Sea added to Renzi’s frustration.
EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem said after three-way talks in Brussels on Monday that “there was no agreement, so this exercise is now over”.

They were strengthened after separatists in eastern Ukraine, backed by Russian firepower, downed Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in July 2014 as it was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, killing all 298 people onboard. Moscow considered the new round of US Ukraine-related sanctions as a continuation of the unfriendly stance toward Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented. The department called six separatists and two former Ukrainian government officials “complicit” in corruption or destabilizing Ukraine.
It is important to point towards the fact that the sanctions would target Russia’s financial, energy and defence sectors. Mr. Klimkin said cease-fire violations had increased in the past month and that there was no progress on exchanging hostages, not even the wounded.

The mercenaries have been also redeployed in the Gorlovka direction, he said. Western governments have sought to work more closely with Moscow over the crisis in Syria to combat the threat of Islamic State following the terrorist attacks in Paris in November.
